1. Odor Control and Deodorization (Odor Absorption)
Principle: The odor absorption capacity of bentonite is determined by the montmorillonite content it contains. Natural sodium bentonite, with an average montmorillonite content of 65%, offers superior physical absorption properties compared to calcium-based or other types of bentonite. Its high absorption capacity makes it significantly better at neutralizing odors.
Practical Application: A comparison of cat litter made from natural sodium bentonite versus sodium-activated bentonite showed that after the same usage period, the indoor air with natural sodium bentonite cat litter remained virtually odor-free.
2.Water Absorption Rate (Swelling Ability)
Principle: The swelling ability of bentonite is closely related to its properties and montmorillonite content. Natural sodium bentonite demonstrates higher swelling and water absorption rates than calcium-based or sodium-activated bentonite. Bentonite with higher purity and montmorillonite content also has superior swelling properties.
Practical Application: Due to its high swelling ability, natural sodium bentonite cat litter instantly absorbs cat urine and forms clumps that don’t stick to the bottom of the litter box. These clumps remain intact even after being buried by cats. Cat litter made from natural sodium bentonite is more efficient, economical, and easy to clean.
3.Comfort (Alkalinity Levels)
Principle: Sodium activation of calcium-based bentonite often involves adding alkali to mimic the performance of natural sodium bentonite. However, even with higher alkalinity, sodium-activated bentonite cannot achieve the same performance as natural sodium bentonite. It often emits a strong alkaline odor that cats find unpleasant.
Practical Application: When using sodium-activated cat litter, the high alkalinity can cause a burning sensation on a cat’s paw pads, leading to peeling or cracking with prolonged use. In contrast, natural sodium bentonite cat litter mimics the natural feel of outdoor soil, providing a comfortable experience for cats. Cats are instinctively drawn to its natural texture and scent, with some even rolling or lying in the litter, demonstrating their preference for its natural qualities.
